A Message from our Club President: National Volunteer Week 2025

I’m pleased to share this update during National Volunteer Week, when we celebrate the power of volunteering and this year’s theme of ‘Connecting Communities’.

Our Kiwanis Club of Perth volunteers have been very active this year connecting with our local community.

The strategic planning workshop in January, set guides for our charity activities and volunteer goals for the year.

We visited Wheelchairs for Kids Australia in February and delivered 14 crocheted blankets made by Club volunteers. We had a wonderful tour of the warehouse where they construct all terrain wheelchairs for children in third world countries.

In March, the Bunnings Warehouse Australia Sausage Sizzle at the Bayswater store was a wonderful team and partnership building event. Helena River Catchment Group assisted us and we are very grateful for the group’s skills. We’re planning another sausage sizzle later in the year.

In April, the Club awarded Terrific Kid and Bring Up Grades certificates to Noranda Primary School students. Attending the assembly is always a fun affair. I was very impressed by how many children in the athletics club have run more than 25 kms in the first term.

At the Baysie Pop market there was a lot of interest in our second-hand children’s’ books as well as our charity work, so we’ll be putting our hand up for the next one City of Bayswater.

At the Bunnings Family Easter Fair in Bayswater our ‘lucky dip’ books were popular and we were able to chat to many parents about our children’s literacy programs. Our two special visitors were Dan Bull MLA who stopped by for a chat and the Easter Bunny.

In May, we were delighted to provide 30 Mother’s Day gifts to residents at Ritcher Lodge, Camellia Court, Bayswater.

The Club launched out new website in May, where you can find out how we support schools and the local community, where to donate, and how to join our Club. We’re currently seeking a social media officer and bookshop volunteers. Visit the website at: Kiwanisperth.org

Thank you to our donors of 2,300 books this year, a large bag of crochet squares for blankets, pencils for literacy awards, and cash donations.

The education of our volunteers continued with our annual training session on child protection practices, including how to keep our school-aged volunteers safe. We also attended two workshops hosted by the Swan Volunteer Resource Centre on governance and finance, and writing grants.

On the theme of ‘Connecting Communities’, our incredible volunteers could not achieve the work we do in supporting children’s literacy and health without that spirit of connection with the people we meet and the volunteer-run organisations we collaborate with. This includes the wonderful Roxy Lane Theatre who provide bookshop space, and the Swan Resource Centre who advertise our volunteer roles.

Please do reach out to Kiwanis Club of Perth if you would like to volunteer with a fabulous group of caring people, I am sure you have lots to offer the club.
