Kiwanis International cares for children, one child and one community at a time, making a global impact.
Kiwanis International has grown this year. Its presence is now in 82 countries with over 400,000members.
Kiwanis Australia District is maintaining its membership through the Committee’s hard work. I had the opportunity to travel to Echuca-Moama for the District Convention. As a delegate, I met Kiwanians driven to ensure the District is complementary to its International and Club family.
The Lieutenant Governor, Louise Heywood, travelled to Perth for our changeover dinner at the end of August. It was a busy time for all of us in Perth.
The Club held an open day, during which Louise declared our Little Library open.
toured Wheelchairs for Kids after delivering 12 crochet blankets; and
celebrated the Club’s 45th Birthday during our changeover dinner.
The charity bookshop, open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 1:30 pm, remains our most reliable source of ongoing income. Melanie has made several changes this year, particularly in naming and labelling the bookshelves and genres. Rostering has improved with more Kiwanis Friends working the Friday shifts.
The donation of books continues to keep the shop busy. On some days, books are sold so quickly that they don’t even make it to the shelves, as they are such good value that booklovers snap them up.
People’s Choice Awards
This award started last year at the Avon Descent Finish Line and was so successful that the club decided to make it an annual event. This year, the club chose Environmental groups:
Toodyay Naturalists’ Club Inc (TNC)
Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise
Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management (WNRM)
Although the number of voters was small, the Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise won by one vote! They received the August donation of $250.
The club has continued its partnership with Noranda Primary School for the Terrific Kids and Bring Up Grades Awards. Redcliffe Primary School was awarded a bursary at the beginning of the year; however, the Bring Up Grades Awards have been on hold recently.
The club again donated funds to HeartKids and the Helena River Catchment Group, who assisted us at our April sausage sizzle at Bunnings. We have also donated crochet blankets made by our volunteers to Wheelchairs for Kids; visited residents in care homes on Mother’s Day; and supported Christmas charities.
The club continues to recycle spectacles and rehome around 1,000 books each year.
The club has been active in recruiting members through the Swan Volunteer Resource Centre, which posts our volunteer vacancies on the WA Volunteers and SEEK Volunteer websites. We have welcomed several Friends of Kiwanis who now assist with retail, social media, website maintenance, and crochet projects.
Members have stepped up to fill roles left vacant by members suffering illness, including the Bookshop coordinator and the School Literacy Program. The club is also encouraging new members to take responsibility for Containers for Change.
Our website has taken shape, maintained by two university students who keep it up to date. Community radio Curtin FM continues to broadcast our club information weekly, leading to more contacts for our blanket makers for Kids in Wheelchairs.
Our club brochure is distributed to nearly every contact with the Kiwanis Club of Perth. It has recently been updated and reprinted thanks to a donation covering printing costs from local MP Dan Bull, a long-time supporter of Kiwanis.
The club is becoming more recognised in the local community, with visitors at Bunnings Hardware or events organised by the City of Bayswater or the City of Swan commenting on our Charity Bookshop in Maylands or noticing our signs.
Recently, two new members joined the Kiwanis family. These Friends have taken on the role of managing our social media, promising many enjoyable posts from these talented, fun-loving individuals.
It is my great pleasure to know, work for and work with all the Members and Friends of the Kiwanis Club of Perth, as well as other local community volunteers.
If you have an idea that could benefit children or would like to join the Kiwanis Club of Perth, or participate in some of our activities, why not contact me for a chat via: [email protected]?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
